Why ? As a school counselor
in training, there are many things that I hope to learn. An area of improvement, that I want to focus on in my professional development this year is
college and career readiness. This is an area I need to be
well trained in, in order to become an effective professional school counselor at the high school
level. With that being said, this counselor workshop put on by College Board, is way to help fulfill my need.
What I learned & Counseling Intervention Techniques ?
Basic Overview: The workshop offered updates on College Board programs and services. In addition to this, resources were provided to help guide students in college and career readiness. The presentation included important updates and valuable information regarding college and career readiness. I intend on utilizing the resources, updates, and valuable information in my current and future work with students in the areas of college and career readiness.
The main topics that were highlighted during the presentation were:
- SAT and SAT Subject Tests
- PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9
- Advanced Placement Programs
- Access Initiatives
- Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD)

1. SAT and SAT Subject Tests
- College Board and Kahn Academy offer free practice tests satpractice.org
- Another resource for free SAT practice is sat.org/practice
- Free online practice for subject tests at satsubjecttests.org & Kahn Academy
Fun Fact: Just 6 hours of studying with official SAT Practice is associated with an average increase of 90 points!
2. PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9
- PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 are the same test offered at different times for 10th and 11th graders. The PSAT/NMSQT is offered in the Fall and PSAT is offered in the Spring.
- PSAT 8/9 is designed for 8th and 9th grade students. The assessment establishes a baseline for college and career readiness.

3. Advanced Placement Programs
The Advanced Placement programs offers 38 courses
and exams for high school students interested in college
course work. Nearly all colleges and universities
in the United States grant credit, placement, or both for
AP scores.
Exam Fees:
- Standard fee $94
- Outside of U.S., U.S. territories, and Canada $124
- College Board offers $32 fee reduction exam
4. Access Initiatives
- "Access to Opportunity" designed to break down barriers for applying to college
- Particularly low income, first generation college students, rural students, and students of color
- "Realize Your College Potential" (collegeboard.org/opportunity)
- Realize Your College Potential sends packets of customized college information and application fee waivers to high-achieving, low-income high school seniors
5. Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD)
- Testing accommodations must be approved by the College Board SSD office prior to the test
- Use SSD Online collegeboard.org/sssdonline to request, manage, and track accommodation requests
- Accommodation approval request takes approximately 7 weeks-SUBMIT ACCOMADATION REQUESTS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE
